What Is OpenADR?

OpenADR (Open Automated Demand Response) is a global Smart Grid standard that enables the automatic exchange of demand response (DR) signals between energy providers, grid operators, and consumers. Instead of manual phone calls or emails during peak demand, OpenADR automates the entire process — from price signals to load curtailment — using a standardized, two-way communication protocol.

OpenADR operates through a two-node architecture: the Virtual Top Node (VTN) is the central server run by a utility or aggregator that sends DR signals, while the Virtual End Node (VEN) is the customer-side client that receives signals and executes load adjustments. This Auto-DR approach is recognized globally and adopted by utilities across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

Codibly’s OpenADR Accelerator packages this into a pre-certified, ready-to-deploy solution supporting both OpenADR 2.0b and 3.0.

What Are the Differences Between OpenADR 2.0b and 3.0?

OpenADR 2.0b uses XML-based messaging with a PUSH/PULL model and requires Mutual TLS for security. OpenADR 3.0 (launched 2023) is a complete redesign using RESTful APIs and JSON, making it significantly easier to implement and integrate with modern systems. OpenADR 3.0 drops Mutual TLS in favor of server-only certificates and introduces a new “program” construct for standardized DR program descriptions.

Codibly’s Accelerator covers both versions, delivering advanced DR capabilities and future-proof integration:

Frequently Asked Questions

OpenADR (Open Automated Demand Response) is a global Smart Grid standard for automated communication between energy providers and consumers during demand response events. It uses a two-node architecture — VTN (Virtual Top Node) as the utility server and VEN (Virtual End Node) as the customer client — to automate load adjustments based on pricing signals, grid reliability events, or emergency conditions.

OpenADR 2.0b uses XML-based messaging with PUSH/PULL models and requires Mutual TLS. OpenADR 3.0 (launched 2023) is a complete redesign using RESTful APIs and JSON, with simplified security (server-only TLS certificates), a new ‘program’ construct for DR offerings, and easier integration with modern energy management systems. OpenADR 3.1.0 is the latest version as of 2025.

When grid demand is high or prices spike, the utility’s VTN sends an automated DR signal via OpenADR to customer VENs. The VEN receives the signal and automatically adjusts connected loads — reducing HVAC, dimming lights, or curtailing EV charging. After the event, the VEN reports actual performance back to the VTN. This entire cycle happens without manual intervention, which is why it’s called Auto-DR.

A VTN is the central server in an OpenADR architecture, usually managed by the utility or aggregator. It publishes signals and events to end devices to manage grid load.

A VEN is the client-side device or software that receives signals from the VTN. It communicates with the local equipment to adjust power usage based on those signals.

Yes, when integrated with a capable metering solution, OpenADR allows for near real-time monitoring. This visibility is essential for effective demand response participation.

A single OpenADR client can typically manage multiple service accounts, depending on the specific implementation and software architecture. This allows for scalable management of distributed energy resources.

Codibly provides Implementation Services, software accelerators, and custom development support. We specialize in the software layer rather than manufacturing physical equipment.

Hardware can be purchased from certified manufacturers listed on the OpenADR Alliance website. For software integration and services, Codibly offers specialized development solutions.

While uncertified clients may function technically, certification is highly recommended to ensure compliance and interoperability. Many utility programs mandate the use of certified OpenADR devices.

Costs vary significantly based on the complexity of the site and existing infrastructure. It involves both the hardware purchase and the integration services required to connect it to your system.
